The Sejarah Melayu tells a beautiful story. Whether the story itself is true or false is less important than another question: why was it written down?
In the early 15th century, Zheng He's fleets repeatedly passed through Malacca, building warehouses there, dropping anchor there, and waiting for the winds there. In 1411, the King of Malacca personally led 540 people on a long journey to Nanjing for an imperial audience — this exchange between the Chinese and Malacca is well-documented. But there is a more captivating story in the Sejarah Melayu: the Chinese emperor bestowed a princess in marriage. That story, passed down by mouth for centuries, cannot find a single word of corroboration in the Ming Dynasty's royal archives. Why was it written down? Two books offer two versions, the protagonists being two different Sultans. Putting them side by side allows us to see one thing.
